Allen Harim awards legacy scholarships

Savings from solar project helping five students to attend college
July 3, 2017

Allen Harim, a leading producer and processor of No Antibiotic Chicken on Delmarva, presented five students with the Allen Harim Legacy Scholarship, which provides a $2,500 financial award for college.

The scholarship was created recently when the company announced it would be using savings from a newly installed solar project to fund the program. Children of employees and contract growers wanting to attend college or trade schools were eligible to apply for the funds.

"We are pleased with this year's award recipients, and look forward to creating a legacy that will pay dividends for the families of our employees and growers for generations to come," said President and CEO Joe Moran. "One of our recipients will be the first family member to attend college and obtain a four-year degree. We look forward to helping make dreams come true."

The scholarships are being administered through the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore. The students were presented certificates of recognition at a lunch reception at Allen Harim's corporate headquarters.

This year's winners are Fantasy Hopkins of Bridgeville, Bridgette Laughery of Seaford, Macey Mitchell of Millsboro, Devin Phillips of Salisbury, Md., and Joshua Tucker of Boonville, N.C.

Hopkins' mother Michelle Horne has worked at Allen Harim in the sourcing department at corporate headquarters since 2008. Hopkins graduated from Sussex Tech and will attend the University of Delaware to major in exercise science, with hopes of one day going on to become a doctor.

Laughery's mother Sheila Laughery has worked in the credit department at the company's corporate headquarters since 2008. Bridgette graduated from Sussex Tech in May 2014 and earned an associate's degree in architectural engineering technology from Delaware Tech. She plans to pursue another associate's degree in construction management this fall.

Mitchell's parents Steve and Wendy Mitchell own Clear Skies Farm in Millsboro and grow chickens for Allen Harim. She is a graduate of Sussex Tech, and she will attend Bryn Athyn College to study to become a special education teacher.

Phillips' father Andrew J. Phillips owns Old Country Farm located on Allen's Mill Road in Delmar, and he has been a contract poultry grower with Allen Harim since 2010. Phillips graduated from Wicomico High School and will attend Salisbury University to study business.

Tucker's father Charles Tucker has worked in the Breeder Department in Liberty, N.C., since 2010. Joshua has been attending Surry Community College and will attend Appalachian State University to study business and accounting. He will be the first person in his family to obtain a bachelor's degree.
